Close Analysis on Hippolyta a Midsummer Nights Dream Essay

Hippolyta is a dominant character in the play; A Midsummer night’s dream. Some views on the play may suggest that Shakespeare represented her as the Queen- Queen Elizabeth I. This may be illustrated through Act 4 Scene 1 where Hippolyta marries Theseus and becomes the Queen of the Amazons. Shakespeare bases Hippolyta’s character on the ancient Plutarch’s portrayal of her in his ‘life of Theseus’. This ideology covers the big mythological battle between Theseus and the Amazons. In the play Hippolyta uses long silences when speaking, this could show her expressions towards her wedding; there is no hurry for her wedding night. There are slight disagreements between Hippolyta and Theseus in the play where it is shown that they have a tense relationship, and the long silences used represents anger. ‘Four days will quickly steep themselves in night, four nights will quickly dream away the time’ is a memorable quote in the play. It can be viewed by some readers that it represents the disagreements between the couple; showing animosity, tension and anger. In the Elizabethan times, society was patriarchal; where the males were the dominant figure heads. The Elizabethan views on the Amazons were that they are a symbol of passion that should be governed by reason. In this idea the reason would be men; therefore Hippolyta has an acceptance of being a ‘trophy wife’ to Theseus where he is in control. As men are known as reason, women are known for emotion. Women should be governed by men in Elizabethan times and therefore in today’s society the text could be perceived in different ways. The Faerie Queen’ a narrative poem by Edmund Spencer had the same idea that women should be governed by men as they were produced in the same era. Hippolyta shows how men are controlling as in act 4 scene 1 she shows the power in which men have; ‘I was with Hercules and Cadmus once, when in a wood of Crete they bayed the bear’. This illustrates the ideology of the Elizabethan era, where no only are men controlling and powerful but also protective. A critic Louis Adrian Montrose had a view on the play in which Hippolyta’s submission to Theseus enacts as a fantasy about a female ruler submitting to male authority. This is what Queen Elizabeth I refused to do. Hippolyta can be seen to be a bit of a romantic, when Titania confesses about one of her sexual affairs and accuses Oberon of having a steamy relationship with Hippolyta; ‘the bouncing Amazon†¦ Your warrior love’. The Elizabethan audience would expect the queen of Amazons to be defeated as she represents passion and therefore this is used as reassurance. The account of ‘moon’ is used and interpreted in many different ways in the plays, Hippolyta says ‘Moon†¦ like a silver bow’. This is reassurance that she is not going to get defeated as this creates an image of a bow carrying Amazon women. The educated Elizabethan audience would see the moon as an image of Diana; she is the Goddess of Hunting, fertility and justity. However the moon can represent that itself. She also uses the moon many times in the play to represent good spirits, ‘the moon shines with a good grace’. Hippolyta can be seen as a nice and thoughtful character as she shows a concern for Hermia at the beginning of the play. Although Hippolyta is sympathetic for the lovers, she turns out to be quite a snob as she critics the mechanicals throughout their bumbling and amateur performance. As she says ‘I love not see wretchedness o’er charged.. , when duty in his service perishing. This means that Hippolyta hates to look at poor people especially when they are such lousy actors. She also shows an open mindedness for the lover’s adventures. She may show a fear that the mechanicals might be humiliated.

Behavior of individuals in various settings is at times very difficult due to ethical constraints. This includes the investigation of why people take risks or gamble with their decision making processes. However, it is quite interesting to note that on situations which are not so threatening for individuals, it is apparent that people typically take risks in picking their options or when making their final choice. The following shows available data on human motivation and the theories surrounding the topic. Risk taking is defined as â€Å"engaging in any activity with an uncertain outcome,† as one scholar puts it. Theories of Motivation on Risk Taking Different theories describe and explain risk taking and why human beings are motivated to pursue or engage in activities or behavior that put their lives in much danger or create an element of risk of whatever form. The following are taken from current literature in the field of human behavior analysis. 1. Psychoanalytic or Psychodynamic Theory. Following the tradition of Freud, human motivation to take risks is taken from the basic understanding that when people feel fear in a certain situation or occasion, it is not good to overcome that fear. Freudian theory condemns outrightly risk taking as plain insanity. It reasons that to risk man’s very life has no warrant at all. It is nonsense. In other important spheres of life, however, to risk is inevitable and deemed necessary. There are many successful people in the business world who are known as risk takers (Llewellyn, 2003). They succeed, in fact, because of this unique attitude in them which is considered foolhardy in other realms. While it is true that life is the most precious commodity a man could ever possess, and to risk it is foolishness, it is equally true that not to risk at all in other areas means cowardice and immobility. Psychoanalysts even treat risk-taking behavior as a symptom of â€Å"a diseased mind. † Because for them, life is not to be gambled, therefore, it is insanity when someone chooses bungee-jumping as his/her sport (Llewellyn, 2003). 2. The Evolutionary Theory. Evolutionary theory explained man’s adventurous nature as simply an expression of his primal instincts (Llewellyn, 2003). Assuming that Darwin’s theory is correct, that man evolved from apes like common animal, a human early in the evolutionary process had to fight for his life to survive. This survival nature, according to this theory, is retained in modern man’s genetic make up (Llewellyn, 2003). This is the reason why even those people in the elite echelon of society choose to use their favorite sport like riding a dirigible as their campaign tool to promote their business. The problem with this theory is that it has remained to be unproven and lacking in evidences as yet. Humans are not proven to have descended from apes. 3. Contemporary Theories a. Extroversion and Introversion Personality theories contend that this two broad scope of personality traits capture the individual’s propensity towards behaving in certain ways. Extroversion helps explain why some people tend to be outgoing and hence, the greater the probability to engage in risky decisions (Llewellyn, 2003). b. Emotional Stability and Neuroticism This is another of the Contemporary theories that shed light on traits that remain stable over a period of time, clearly indicating which may best describe an individual and what differs him/her from another. Emotionally stable people, as those who posit on this model, may take risks but have taken many things to great lengths in order to get the best possible option or alternative (Llewellyn, 2003). Conversely, people who are more on the neuroticism side manifest the greater tendency to take risks without much weighing on the consequences. The tendency to be impulsive is to a higher degree present in individuals under this category. 4. Eysenck and Costa and McCrae’s model These two theorists added their own version to the array of personality theories. The former has the Psychoticism versus Humaneness dimension while the latter two theorists added three dimensions: Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, and Agreeableness. The main argument against these classifications is its narrowness in explaining and categorizing the complexities that make human behavior (Llewellyn, 2003). While they help explore different behaviors or attitudes, there are more that remained unexplained. Until now, certain serial killers or murderers, defy the above mentioned explanations of human behavior. 5. The Zuckerman ‘Sensation Seeking Trait’ Although an expansion on one of the features of Psychoticism and Humaneness model, Sensation Seeking helps also explain the differences between individuals. There are people who do have a higher degree of this trait; like more men seek sensation-enhancing-experiences or â€Å"venturesome† traits, while others have very minimal of this trait. This is what Zuckerman refers to in his Sensation seeking trait theory. What other experts consider as this theory’s limitation is embedded in the matter of other personality traits’ influence on risk taking behavior other than this trait by itself. Studies reveal that the psychological profiles of risk takers are diverse and the universality of this trait is still further being investigated (Llewellyn, 2003). Risk taking is a fascinating area of interest for many students of human behavior. When explored through the eyes of a Psychoanalyst, the subject becomes even more intriguing because Freudian understanding possesses an attractive alternative to the more cognitive way of assessing risk taking behavior. When the subject of evolutionary psychology of explaining risk taking behavior is concerned, it contains a ring of truth in it that many today are convinced of its manner of explaining behavior. Instinct is still a potent facet in behavior that cannot be eradicated from the study of behavior of humans (Llewellyn, 2003). When people are confronted with the distinctiveness of the human personality, the dimensions are almost unlimited; some experts opt for the multi-dimensional method while others choose the narrow and concise way. All of these approaches have their strengths and weaknesses; degree of breadth and limitations. Wells, The Signalman by Charles Dickens and The Judges House by Bram Stoker. These stories were all written in the nineteenth century at the time of the Victorians. They were an extremely popular form of entertainment as there was no television, films or videos. Many of the short stories written in the nineteenth century were first published in magazines and newspapers. Mystery and supernatural stories were very popular in the Victorian age as the Victorians were fascinated by the supernatural. During these times Sherlock Holmes wrote his first book and authors such as Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell and M. R. James began to address the eras fascination with death. In each of the three stories there are a number of minor characters, which contribute a lot to the stories. The characters issue words of warnings, which are continually ignored by the protagonist. At the beginning of the Red Room it says, It is of your own choosing, said the man with the withered arm. So at the very start of the story we are already left in suspense. The man with the withered arm repeats this phrase throughout the whole story. This adds to the apprehension of the story. The next minor character we meet is the old woman, yet again we are not given her real name. This adds to the mystery of the story. When the man with the withered arm was talking the old woman sat staring hard into the fire with her pale eyes wide pen. We then wonder what has happened to leave the old woman in shock staring at the fire. She then speaks: and eight and twenty years you have lived and never seen the likes of this house, I reckon. Theres a many things to see, when ones still but eight and twenty, This leaves me, the reader, to wonder what the old lady has heard about the room or what she thinks is in the room. Later on in the story when the man with the withered arm says, But if you go to the red room tonight This night of all nights said the woman You go alone These comments leave me to wonder what these two characters know about what will happen tonight and why the man must go alone. To me it implies that something has happened in the room and it could be the anniversary of some terrible event. The old woman repeats this saying throughout the story just like the way the man with the withered arm repeats, It is your own choosing So throughout the story of the Red Room the minor characters add a lot of suspense by their descriptions and what they say! In The Signalman by Charles Dickens the minor character is the signalman. When the man and the signalman come face to face the signalman is very quiet and unable to speak much. This makes me wonder why and what has possibly happened. Later on in the story when the signalman is speaking to the man he says, If ever you make me another visit, I will try to tell you. These few words add a lot of suspense and I begin to wonder what will the signalman tell the man. I then wonder why is he so glad to let Malcolm Malcolmson live in the house rent free and what is wrong with the house. It indicates that there could be some kind of history surrounding the house. Malcolm Malcolmson then goes to see Mrs Witham, who is the landlady of the inn and a newcomer to the area who seems to be aware of the rumours surrounding the house. Mrs Witham says to Malcolmson, Not in the Judges house! she grew pale as she spoke I wonder why Mrs Witham goes so pale and what is wrong with the Judges house. Already there is a lot of suspense in the story. Mrs Witham is a kind yet curious character and is very motherly to Malcolm Malcolmson, maybe this is why she is so fearful for him to stay at the house. Later on in the story the doctor is introduced and asks Malcolmson what he noticed in the house. Dr Thornhill, an educate, thinks Malcolmson has been drinking strong tea at night when Malcolmson tells him what happened. This makes me think that the doctor does not believe in these rumours but it also makes me wonder what he knows about the house and what Malcolm should have noticed because Dr Thornhill asks Malcolmson what he noticed in the house. Another character, Mrs Dempster, is also very sceptical of the Judges house. Do you think theres no rats and beetles there? And do you imagine, sir, that you wont see none of them! Rats is boogies and boogies is rats; and dont you get to think anything else! she says. Throughout each of the stories the minor characters give warnings to the protagonist but these warnings are always ignored and are always vital to what will soon happen to the protagonist. I have come to the conclusion that a story written in the nineteenth century is not just about the main character but it is about all the characters including the minor characters no matter how minor they are. All the minor characters, no matter how minor they are add to the suspense of the story for the reader, either by their reaction, descriptions or what they say. I have also concluded that the minor characters all seem to give warnings to the protagonist, which should be listened to.
